Using the Environment to teach Mathematics – by Ronald Ddungu

“Mathematics concepts have remained a myth to many students because of the way we teach. If the lessons were made more practical then the students would enjoy whatever is being taught.” says Ronald Ddungu.

Ronald Ddungu is a teacher of Mathematics at Gayaza High School, Wakiso, Uganda and one of the active teachers in the “Inspiring Science Education for Girls Using ICT project.

The project is implemented by SchoolNet Uganda in partnership with the Barclays Bank, Ministry of Education and Sports and |Digital Links International (UK).

“So we cannot sacrifice students at the pretence that there is no time for student centered learning because of the demands of our syllabus” adds Ronald Ddungu.

Details can be obtained by downloading the document which shows senior five students of Gayaza High School studying Statistics: “collection of data on the circumference of trees”. This was a student-centered lesson done during their free time on Saturday.
