Workshops for Science laboratory Equipment: Use, Care and Construction from locally available materials and crafts.
Workshop Venues:
Three workshops targeting Physics and Biology teachers and laboratory technicians each lasting four days will be conducted at:
- Workshop 1: (Aug 17- Aug 20), 2009 at Muntuyera High School Kitunga, Ntungamo.
- Workshop 2: (Aug 24- Aug 27 ), 2009 at Kings College Budo.
- Workshop 3: (Aug 31 – Sept 3), at Gulu University
Target participants for these workshop:
The three workshops will target secondary school teachers of Physics and Biology, including Peace Corps volunteer science teachers and Secondary science laboratory attendants.
Workshop description:
The workshops will concentrate on:
• Building, repairing and teaching with apparatus for S3 to S6 Physics, primarily electricity and magnetism, and some topics in sound and wave motion.
• Use of a digital multimeter to trouble-shoot equipment.
• Use of apparatus for teaching Biology.
Participants are encouraged to bring along if possible, any equipment needing repair or explanation.
Objectives of this training:
Those completing this course should be able to:
- Know how to build at least 4 pieces of Physics or Biology equipment from local materials.
- Know local sources of useful materials, tools, and crafts.
- Gain in ability to repair existing science lab equipment.
- Know how to use of a digital voltmeter as a useful trouble-shooting tool for the lab.
- Know sources for appropriate simulation programs demonstrating scientific principles.
- Get started using those simulation programs.
- Join the community of science teachers and lab assistants in Uganda for continuing support with laboratory issues through communication.
Participants will be presented with a certificate of completion at the ends of each workshop.
Workshop facilitators:
The facilitators of the workshops will include:
1. Alan Olson (USA), RPCV teacher of High school Physics, Maths and electronics for 5 years; engineer for technical support of NMR and MRI instrumentation for 30 years.
2. Carl Katsu (USA), RPCV, High school teacher of earth sciences for 16 years.
3. Daniel Kakinda(Uganda), Physics teacher for 18 years and currently Training Director of SchoolNet Uganda
Costs:
Tuition is free. Each participant will be required to pay a nominal fee for accommodation and meals directly to the respective hosting school.
Maximum number of participants:
Due to the practical nature of the workshops, each workshop will be limited to a maximum of 30 participants. Registration will be based on first come-first serve basis.
