Dear Counselor, before and after my periods, I see some fluids coming from my private parts which is colorless and sometimes white in color. What should I do to solve that problem?

Not all vaginal discharge should be a problem. Some discharge is for cleaning purposes and lubrication. It tends to concentrate towards a woman’s periods. It’s normal for a woman to experience vaginal discharge. If this discharge is colorless and does not smell badly and if it is not associated with pain and is not excessive, then it’s normal. However, if it is has bad smell or excessive, then it could be due to an infection. You are advised to consult your school nurse or even a gynecologist. Meanwhile, keep yourself clean enough.

Dear Counselor, I had a time when I could miss my periods. Sometimes, I could even miss for four months. I then started using some tablets in order to receive them and now I cannot have them before I take the tablets. So what can I do?

Irregular periods among teenagers are normal. It was wrong to use medication to induce your periods. As you grow up, the menstrual cycle stabilizes and you start experiencing your periods normally. Stop any kind of medication and let your body control its systems and processes. Should they not come, consult a doctor.

Dear Counselor, I have a friend who was seeking advice from me that in her life she has never been talked to (“conned”) but I failed to get advice to give her. So what advice can I give to that friend of mine?

How old is this girl?  At secondary level, she is still young and may be living in a protective environment and her exposure to boys is limited. She should in fact feel happy that she is not bothered by boys by this time because being “conned” is too disturbing and may lead her to making irrational decisions. Her time hasn’t come and “Mr. Right” will be coming her way! . Advise her to concentrate on her books and don’t let any boy take advantage of her!

Dear Counselor, is it good to play sex while in menstruation?

May 2, 2010 No Comments

It isn’t good. There is need to respect your body and during this time, you should give your body some time to rest. Besides, it is a dirty act to play sex during menstruation. This also increases chances for infection including HIV/AIDS since there is a lot of blood involved. The bible is as well against this act. It is still too early for you to be sexually involved!

Dear Counselor, I have a friend and that friend has a lover. And that lover has a wife but the guy promised to marry her after studies. The girl too loves the guy so much but she knows that the man has a wife and he is a Muslim. Can she continue with him?

This kind of relationship is unhealthy. If the two lovers are sexually involved, then it is exploitation. The man and girl completely have different life styles, aspirations and ambitions. Besides, there are also those cultural differences that may hamper their success. The girl needs to understand that there are risks involved in this kind of relationship including HIV/AIDS, Acid cases and all forms of hostility from the man’s wife that may even be life threatening. Besides; how prepared is she to be 2nd wife? She still has all life ahead and better things lie ahead. The decision still remains hers!

Dear Counselor, how can one get rid of a crash? There is this boy I love very much and I feel I want to get rid. What can I do?

Love is hard to define and more so measure. If you truly loved this boy, then it would be hard to let go. But you have your reasons for thinking about quitting. Sitting with this boy for a talk would be an appropriate way to start. Give him your reasons and ask him to understand. Listen to his side and eventually come out with your position stressed. It won’t be easy but if it’s the best for you, then stick to your wish. Expect some tears in this but they are good for healing!!!! Communication skills and assertiveness are your best weapons.

Dear Counselor, what causes sores/itching around one’s private parts and armpits? My friend has suffered for 2 years without medical attention. Please advise her and please tell us the disease/infection she might be suffering from because she is confused.

Causes behind vaginal itching are varied but most common known are chemical irritants contained in certain products. Content based chemicals that come in contact with the skin which encourage irritation are detergents, fabric softeners, feminine sprays, ointments, douches, contraceptive foams or jellies. Other causes may include vaginal yeast infection, Vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina), stress, sweat, and STIs.
Your friend should go to a health centre for proper medical examination and treatment.

A woman is born with a finite number of eggs, which are stored in the ovaries. The ovaries also produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone which regulate menstruation and ovulation. Menopause occurs when the ovaries no longer releases eggs. The woman stops menstruating, marking the end of her reproductive period. Natural menopause occurs between 40 and 60 years of age but this varies from woman to woman. The median age is 51 years. Developed countries tend to have late menopause the average age being 55. And in least developed countries, the median age is 44.

Prolonged periods can be brought about by a number of factors:
The most common cause is a change in the hormonal levels. Other causes may include; Cancer of the Uterus, thickening/build up of the Uterus walls, Uterine fibroids, medical conditions, pregnancy complications, change in birth control pills, use of an IUD for birth control, use of certain drugs such as steroids, recent surgery or other uterine procedure, infection in the uterus and stress.

Dear Counselor, I hear about masturbation. What is the meaning of masturbation? Explain for me please.

Masturbation is manipulation of one’s sex/private organs to derive sexual pleasure. The boys stimulate sex pleasure by playing with their penis until they achieve ejaculation and for the girls, they use objects like sex toys, fingers, test tubes and bananas to get pleasure. Whereas it is a safe sex practice, it is associated with addiction.

Dear Counselor, how can one control her feelings?

It depends on what kind of feelings one has. Some feelings are good while others are bad. I am taking it that you are talking about sexual feelings. Your mind can not to be totally off sex it is everywhere so the best thing to do is to get involved in something that will take up your full attention. Things that will keep your mind away from sex, like physical activities, chores, reading or studying stuff like that and mostly if you are a Christian PRAY!
