I arrived in Gayaza High School for the workshop at exactly 9.00 p.m. on 3/5/2015.Upon arrival, I was settled down by Miss Namukose Phiona who informed me that there were activities given out which I was meant to do. Upon reaching the computer lab, I found everyone busy as if the day had just began.
This experience made me change my thinking that as you think of sleeping in the night, there are many people in the world who are not about to sleep at such a time and doing meaningful work yet waking up at the same time with you and moving ahead as you either gamble with your previous burdens.
The task activities given were right there. The first activity was to move around the room and get everyone’s phone number and e-mail address to share with each one through networking about the club and any area of interest in your teaching subject area.
I have really appreciated this approach for I interacted with people of different places yet it was the first time. I came to learn that in life with need one another to always work as a team because through networking I got a lot of rich information by making friends yet it was only an hour’s interaction. It has made me to appreciate time as a resource and everyone’s uniqueness and the need to learn something new that can build us in order to be citizens of impact in the community around us.
As many people were sending to me their experiences and topics, I was kind of stuck on my side because it has been long since I last worked on the computer. The irony of this is that we have a fully stocked computer lab back at school with Internet connections but I have which really require a lot to learn and to this I was ignorantly thinking I can’t handle.
The mess I was in that night made me change direction of my thinking to wake up from ignorance and move ahead. Well I tried my best but the computer stressed me by not opening up. I consulted members in the room to help me and by the time I was retiring to bed I had moved a step.
As I write now I am able to do most of the things I thought were only meant for the computer teachers. This has made me to learn that in life we need to be dynamic and move on otherwise one risks being left behind as others move on .We should move out of the comfort zones and do something remarkable in our time life especially if the call desires you to change please do
The second day Monday 4/05 /2015 had its own uniqueness. I had assignment to complete and the lead facilitator informed us that we had to complete all our assignments and he was seriously monitoring our work.
This approach helped me to learn that in life , once given tasks it is your own duty and responsibility to perform it . In my profession as a teacher, unless one develops this attitude, it is difficult to perform. I really have also to use this approach to my learners because this approach ignites motivation and a person is able to perform the tasks because one sees it as one’s own responsibility.
I was inspired by the permanent secretary’s speech and picked out the acronym AACCCEEPTED and the 3Rs for teachers. The 3Rs for are to be Responsible, Reliable and Resourceful. I have been inspired by this and honestly I have taken on every meaning of the letters found in the key note address. I am not the same.
I have also been inspired by incorporating multimedia information during my class work. In my teaching area such as C.R.E. and Geography, once I incorporate this in my lessons, the subjects will be a reality to the classroom making the students very responsible citizens who will have an impact in the general development of our planet earth as home for man. This approach has helped me to look at learners from another angle not just being examination oriented but having an impact in one’s daily life and preparing one to live in this dynamic world positively.
I appreciated the fact that our learners social life should also be a concern to everybody and as for us as teachers we ought not always to overlook this. In order to have a health citizenship of tomorrow who will help us, the children need to grow up in all spheres of life.
As I watched and listened to life testimonies of students, it lit a fire to help reach out to such voices that need help other than to be left to rot in a sea of their problems. As a teacher, I realized that there is a role I can play in the lives of these young ones so I ought to move beyond academics and help everywhere.
We wound up the third day by being given tasks of writing a composition which I thought I could not handle but just as I began that in life we need to be dynamic, I did it and have faithfully written though it has been long since I last wrote a composition.
I appreciate the organizers for this workshop for I have really learnt a lot and got skills.
