Our Mother

Strong and loving
At her mercy we live
For nine months
She bares
With tatters on her
Waving off with strong
Wind from the west
Only to expose the dangling breasts
A real mother you are

In the storm you stand
In lack you provide
When domestic violence arises
She sobs privately
With bites in her heart
But a strong woman
Defends her children

With words of hope
It shall be well
With her and me
It shall be well
With us here

They leap with happiness
Can feel nothing but joy
As she sings for them
We are one family
With one blood flowing
In one vessel.

Oh Parents! Oh parents!
The people who made us to live
It would be your decision to kill us
As many do it by aborting and
Throwing us in demolished pit latrines
You are really treasured
By children of this land
You are the most important people

Oh parents! Oh parents!
Under your care we have grown
Boasting of how rich we are
Because of you and your decisions
Treatment when we are depressed
You are the most important people.

Oh parents! Oh parents!
Just like we can’t pay God
For what he has done
You are the same
Because we can’t give anything
But to read hard
And excel to make you happy
Oh dear parents!
You are the most important.

My name is Babirye Peace. I was privileged to attend the WSWM Student Peer Educators’ camp organized and conducted by SchoolNet Uganda at Gayaza High School (15-20) Dec 2011.

I benefited the following from the WSWM Student Peer Educators’ workshop:

• I learnt how to communicate with fellow youth, how to write poems, how to keep on task and how to handle different people in the best way possible.

• I made new friends from different districts of the country.

• I realized that our attitudes determine our altitude. At first I had a negative attitude on skit production but I ended up liking it. I got the technical skills for webbing and learnt how skit recording is done.

• During the brainstorming sessions, I learnt that two heads are better than one, that no one knows too much not to learn from other or too little not to be able to teach others and working together is the best way to solve a problem.

• From the inspiration talks by young people, I learnt that no matter what age you are, you can do something good even through people may think it is hard. I learnt that we have to pass through challenges in order to prosper so we should be ready to work to overcome the challenges which come our way. I also learnt that I need to have an idea of what I want to be in future and to focus on it.

• I learnt that time management is a core value.

KEY POINT: “IT IS OUR DECISIONS NOT THE CONDITIONS OF OUR LIVES THAT DETERMINE OUR DESTINY” so we should make good decisions.

Oh! Rape Oh! Rape
You are an evil
An evil which tortures the victims
Tortures the victims, torture the victims
Both mentally and physically
Rape is an evil
An evil which we should try to avoid
But how?
But how?

By avoiding bad groups
Bad groups that move at night
Bad groups that dress badly
Badly that they attract bad people
Bad people who are rapists

You have no mercy
You kill elders and leave young ones to suffer
What shall we do not to acquire you?

Oh! AIDS! AIDS! AIDS!
You are got in different ways
You make young ones orphans
You make women widows
You make men widowers
You make people to loss hope
You make lovers to disappear

Oh! AIDS! AIDS! AIDS!
To prevent you
We must use condoms
We must abstain from sex
We must be faithful to our partners

AIDS! AIDS! AIDS!
Fellow countrymen
And more especially the youth
Open your ears wide and listen to what I say
Fellow countrymen
Many people call it a curse from God and a problem in our world
And all over the world
AIDS has become a problem in our lives

Oh! AIDS
Grabbing the whole world to death
Killing me and you
Killing innocent people with no mercy and without discrimination
The young and the old
The rich and the poor
Sisters and brothers
Babies and mothers

Oh! AIDS
Where do you come from?
With many escorts; diarrhea, syphilis
Skin rashes, persistent cough among others
Fellow students be aware
Hold your spears, bows and arrows
AIDS has no cure

Love
Think of it, you won’t anger
It keeps no anger
Believe in it, you will forget
It is forgiving
Trust in it, you won’t lose hope
It is hopeful
Acknowledge it, you will learn to care
It is caring
Feel it, you will be patient
It is patient
How good is love!!

Love
It is the best gift you can offer
It is wide but hidden
It is a good as itself
Nothing is better than it
It breaks the yoke of grudge
It is the backbone of all nature
It can be felt moving and changing
But touching NO!
How can we define love!!

Love
It has made people die
It has caused anger
If it hates, it takes
Long to forgive
It has truly grown complicated
And cannot be understood
How can we define love!!
