Dear Counselor, SchoolNet Uganda has trained at least one WSWM Student Peer Educator from each of the school participating in the WSWM program. What is the purpose of the training and what are the trained Student Peer Educators expected to do when they return to their schools?

The training of the student peer educators is aimed at developing confident, competent and knowledgeable school-based peer educators with the right positive attitude, correct knowledge and the right skills to design and implement student peer sexuality education at their schools. These skills include interpersonal and group communication skills and skills to facilitate a range of interactive methodologies (e.g. discussions, role plays, skits) used in peer education.

The trained student peer educators are expected on return to their schools to:

  • Mobilize their peers to join the WSWM program and to practice healthy and responsible sexuality. Sexuality is the way you relate to yourself and to others and the way others relate to you.
  • Assist the WSWM teachers (under the supervision of the teachers) to conduct some of the WSWM lessons in particular Lesson 14- The Exhibition.
  • Conduct one-on-one interpersonal communication sessions with fellow students in the school using the skills learned in the training; assist the students to assess their risky behavior particularly behaviors that put them at risk of unintended pregnancy, drug abuse and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS.
  • Educate the youth at school on life skills and Youth Sexual Reproductive Health and encourage them to delay sex till such a time when they are ready for the responsibilities and consequences which go with sex or if they are already sexually active to practice secondary abstinence.
  • Set an example to other students by practicing healthy and responsible own sexuality.
  • Clarify myths and misconceptions regarding Youth Sexual Reproductive Health particularly with regard abstinence, drugs and pregnancy.

Well. It is very good and educative to be part of WSWM in schools because a number of students/youths have learnt a lot from each other. For example the challenges of SRHR which are faced by the youth today.

As a well-trained STUDENT PEER EDUCATOR, I believe that over 85% of todays teens learn by what they see and this has highly benefited a lot to my fellow peers through educating others by use of filmed skits which we have conducted in several schools in western Uganda.

I have as well learnt from all these people that I have shared with and I believe to have impacted positively on their lives…as well as getting to learn from me.

Great thanks to WSWM Sponsors, SchoolNet Uganda and WPF for the big job you are doing. You have enabled many of us to see the real light and the real essence of a healthy living.
    God bless you.
