What I have learnt from World Starts With Me (WSWM)

I am Anyine Saul of Kako Secondary School. I Joined the WSWM in 2008 because it is so interesting and educative.

Before joining WSWM, I never knew that early pregnancy was bad especially to a student because I had even thought of making my girlfriend pregnant. Many boys and girls like early pregnancy because they think it is a way of showing and proving that they are real men and women. I was also thinking the same. That is why I wanted to make my girlfriend pregnant.

When I joined WSWM, I leant form Lesson 8: “Pregnancy for Girls and Boys too” that early pregnancy has a number of negative effects to the youth like dropping out of school for both girls and boys and one can even get STIs or HIV/AIDS.

I also learnt about love. Before joining WSWM, I used to think that love is all about having sex with a girl and I used to tell girls how I loved them but I never knew I was deceiving them. From WSWM, I learnt that love means having good feelings for yourself and others. Love is caring, respecting, enjoying people the way there are and love is trust. I even learnt that one should not worry if he or she is not in love for his or her time will come and everyone has a freedom to make own choice of getting a real lover.

I learnt from Lesson 5: “Boys and Girls, Men and Women” that as you grow older, you are given more responsibilities at school, at home and in the community like cooking, cleaning etc.

From WSWM, I leant from Lesson 3: “Is your body changing too?” about changes which take place in our body. I used to think some of these changes were abnormal. I used to wake up when my bed is wet but I would fear to tell anyone because I thought they would laugh at me. I learnt from WSWM that these were wet dreams; wet dreams are normal and are part of the body changes in boys. Other body changes I learnt included deepening of voices and production of sperms in boys, sweat glands becoming more active, growth of breasts, menstruation and enlargement of hips in girls.

In Lesson 6: “Fight for your Rights” , I learnt that all people have human rights e.g. e right to life, a right to education, a right to health care, a right to protection, a right to expression and a right to participation. I got to know that there is too much abuse of rights for the youth. A lot of youth have no education, production and participation.

In Lesson 7: “Sexuality and Love”, I learnt sexuality has so many definitions. Sexuality means having sexual feelings, feeling attractive and good to yourself, making romantic and exciting stories
