AWEBWA SARAH – TEACHER, WANYANGE GIRLS SCHOOL
My name is Awebwa Sarah and I am a teacher in Wanyange Girls School. I teach Biology and Chemistry. There is an ICT department at school and the staff in this department is always willing to help others especially the ICT literates. I requested for help but pulled out in a very short time, for I couldn’t really measure.
Next I went to attend a workshop organized by Cyber Schools Technology Solution. I didn’t get much because there after I relaxed.
The next workshop was by SchoolNet Uganda. Chance hit again and I was told by the school to accompany girls from our school to a 5-day Science with ICT holiday camp for girls organised and conducted by SchoolNet Uganda which was held at Gayaza High school in May 2007.
It was quite a challenging experience for me. My first challenge was that when I came with students, I knew many were far better than me in ICT. I had to show up my weak areas so that I could get help from both students and teachers at the camp. Contrary to what I had expected, everyone at the camp was willing to help me. This was an eye opener to me. It taught me to be open minded, never to keep quite and accumulate problems.
One of the facilitators at the camp, Mr. Lawrence Ssenkubuge, cautioned as ladies to be fast movers whenever there are opportunities. I took this caution seriously and it became a driving force inside me.
As I talk now, I am the content Manager of a project at our school called Education for the Rural People Using ICT. In this project, students produce multimedia digital content which is recorded on audio tapes, video tapes and DVDs. The content produced is sold to students from rural schools which don’t have facilities like our school at give away price. We hope to use the small income from the project to help poor girls in nearby school with some basic requirements. I enrolled for a Cisco Networking course and I can now even share with others what I learn in the Cisco Networking course.
Great thanks to SchoolNet Uganda for thinking about the girls (ladies) and to Mr. Daniel Kakinda in particular for being such a good father and being able to absorb all our weak areas just to see some of us come up. I now know the sky is the limit.
