John Ssenkunja – How SchoolNet Uganda has benefited me
I am John Ssenkunja, a teacher of Biology and Deputy Head teacher, 3R’S Secondary School in Mukono District. I regard myself as an ICT adopter. I have been involved with SchoolNet Uganda activities for more than six years now. During that period, I have been transformed into a person who has confidence and no reservations with taking up tasks due to the exposure to the various ICTs.
I first got exposed to SchoolNet Uganda activities when the organization was carrying out sensitization on the use of ICTs in teaching various subjects. I was by then a teacher at Ndejje Senior Secondary School. I was exposed to the potential of digital resources in enriching the teaching and learning experience. The enthusiasm with which my students took up the exploration of e-books which were provided by SchoolNet Uganda challenged me as a teacher to adapt to the new reality and endeavours to learn digital resources so as to remain relevant as a facilitator of learning.
Through SchoolNet Uganda I have been able to participate in a number of projects, and activities which have helped to improve my ICT and other skills.
In 2002, through SchoolNet Uganda (the Uganda, iEARN implementing partner), I participated in an Online Professional Development course for teachers conducted by International Education and Resources Network (iEARN). The course introduced me to integrating international tele-collaborative projects in my teaching which I did with my class then.
I have had the opportunity of participating in a number of SchoolNet Uganda courses/workshops. These workshops include:
- A 2-week workshop on Website development sponsored by UNESCO-IICBA.
- A 1-week workshop on advanced Website development sponsored by UNESCO-IICBA.
- E-Learning Mentor course sponsored by World-Links Organization.
- Education Video Production sponsored by UNESCO-IICBA.
- Virtual Reality Training Workshop sponsored Kyambogo University.
I am currently participating in the Inspiring Science Education For Girls Using ICT project as a facilitator. I have just joined The World Starts With Me (WSWM) project.
I have become quite well versed with using various ICTs in processing, manipulating and presenting of information.
Through the SchoolNet Uganda human network, I am able to share experiences and educational resources. This continually makes me a more efficient user of technology and enables me to participate in a number of projects. I have come to understand better how young people and adults learn.
I am now able to use much better teaching and learning resources like educational digital multimedia resources which enrich the learning experience.
I am now in a better position to advocate for the advantages of using ICTs by practicing its use. This has enabled me to convince some previously sceptic stakeholders who have now adopted investing in ICTs like my school has adopted the digitization of administrative records which makes administration more efficient.
My great appreciations go to the SchoolNet Uganda community for having provided me the environment, resources and opportunity to realise these achievements.
I urge everyone to continue exploring and exploiting the opportunities within SchoolNet Uganda fraternity.
