RONALD DDUNGU-TEACHER, GAYAZA HIGH SCHOOL

I am Ronald Ddungu, a teacher of Mathematics and Physics.
I have been  attending SchoolNet Uganda’s workshops for the last about 4 years and I have greatly improved my computer skills, networking skills ,general knowledge and the ability to plan and execute projects.

Through SchoolNet Uganda I did an online course (e-learning) on Curriculum-Technology integration by World-Links (http://www.world-links.org) in 2003 and this was my entry into the computer world. I have never had a formal training in use of computers but the little expertise I have is through workshops organized by SchoolNet.

I have bought computers and connected them to the Internet for my home use with the advice of SchoolNet, Uganda .Working at home has made life so easy for me and given me more opportunities.

I attended the e-learning Africa conference in May 2007 in Kenya together with other SchoolNet Uganda members and the experience I gained has led me forward to greater heights. I was also able to host a Harambee session during the conference on teaching mathematics better with a team of mathematics teachers across the world.

In July 2007, SchoolNet Uganda helped me and three students from Gayaza High School to attend the iEARN (International Education and Resource Network) conference which was held in Cairo, Egypt. At the conference, I made many friends with whom we are setting the stage for many projects such as the Best project-learning about good business projects, City Arts project,-using Art to bring peace to all and also to fight global warming, My Name project: Students learn about their friends’ names. We have now formed the Gayaza High School iEARN club with a hope of reaching out to many more schools.

At the end of Sept, 2007, SchoolNet Uganda advertised a three weeks online course by ICRAF Kenya on contextualizing the teaching and learning in schools using natural resources. I was admitted for this course and the experience has been refreshing plus joining a network of scholars. This network keeps me updated with any likely education opportunities. This is very satisfying to me.

In Sept 2007, I was enrolled for a Masters’ course in Education for sustainability with the London South Bank University which is an online course. This was advertised to us through SchoolNet Uganda and I got full sponsorship for all the tuition fees. Recently in October 2007, we were invited to South Africa for a face to face course orientation with other African scholars.

I have been taught the value of networking and the need to share with others. It is unbelievable how my life has changed within just a period of one year. Currently I spend more time trying to involve my students and colleagues into networking projects.

Thank you SchoolNet Uganda.  To the rest of my colleagues, please better get involved .
