THE World Starts With Me (WSWM) Project Headteachers’ Knowledge Sharing & Orientation Workshop held at Mukono Zonal Agriculture Research & Development Institute (MUZARDI) 16th -17th June, 2009.

 SchoolNet Uganda is partnership with the World Population Foundation organized a 2-day residential workshop for the Headteachers who participated in the World Starts With Me (WSWM) 2008 project cycle.

Workshop Theme:

Improving Academic Performance by addressing the Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) challenges in schools , including the changing face of HIV/AIDS, through the World Starts With Me (WSWM) program” 

Workshop Objectives

  1. To provide school Head teachers an opportunity to share formally and informally with colleagues ways of addressing the Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) challenges faced by schools.
  2. To provide the school Head teachers with an update on the planned activities for the WSWM 2009 project cycle.
  3. To brainstorm what schools can do to address some of the new SRHR challenges in schools like; the increasing number of students who were perinatally HIV infected, child sacrifice, homosexuality and drug abuse.
  4. To introduce to the Head teachers, the characteristics of youth-friendly SRHR services and work with the Head teachers to identify the SRHR youth-friendly centers near their schools which can handle students’ referral cases.
  5. To hear through personal testimonies of young positives, the challenges the young positives face in schools and at home.
  6. To brainstorm the role of the school-based WSWM student peer educators and the criteria to be used by the schools to select the student to be trained as a WSWM student peer educator from each of the 100 old schools in the Aug-Sept holiday of 2009.
  7. To update the school head teachers on the Education and Sports Sector, National policy guidelines on HIV/AIDS.
  8. To introduce the Head teachers to the new innovations in the WSWM implementations like the WSWM online Support Centre (http://www.schoolnetuganda.sc.ug/wswmonlinesupport/ ) the WSWM Youth Voices and Rose and David -Teddy Bear Project.
  9. To share with the school head teachers the best and worst practices at the WSWM exhibitions.
  10. To get ideas and suggestions from the Head teachers on how best to implement WSWM in their schools. 

Workshop Participants:

The Head teachers of the 100 schools which participated in the WSWM 2008 project cycle were invited to the workshop.
Participants were expected to arrive on the Evening of Monday 15th June 2009 and to depart on the morning of Thursday 18th. Participants were requested to carry with them personal effects (towel, soap, tooth paste and tooth brush, mosquito net etc.)

Workshop logistics:

Participating schools were expected to take care of their Head teacher’s round transport and off-pocket allowances where applicable. SchoolNet Uganda and World Population Foundation took care of accommodation, meals and workshop costs.
