Dear Counselor, I have a mucus like discharge from my vagina. Am I normal or this is a sign of a sexuality transmitted infections (STI)?

It is normal for girls and women to have a vaginal discharge (a fluid or mucus stuff) that comes out of the vagina. All women have this vaginal discharge.

The purpose of the vaginal discharge is to keep the vaginal area moist and to protect against damage or infection. The discharge comes mainly from the glands in the cervix (the neck of the womb) and is slightly acidic which helps to keep the infections at bay.

Normal vaginal discharge should not be thought of as unclean or unhealthy. It is part of the self-cleansing mechanism of the vagina through which the vagina cleans itself and very effectively.

The amount of discharge varies from girl to girl.  Some girls produce a lot of vaginal discharge whilst others produce very little. Throughout the month, the discharge may vary a little in colour, what it feels like, how sticky it is and how much of it there is. The vaginal discharge tends to be a bit heavier around the time a girl ovulates, which is when an egg is released from the ovary and moves into the fallopian tubes.

Normal vaginal discharge should never cause itching or burning and should not be smelly. You should not worry if your discharge is normal.

If your vaginal discharge is smelly, causes itching and is of a different colour than the usual e.g. it is yellow or green, this may be indication of a vaginal infection and you need to see a doctor.

Dear Counselor, I am a girl of 15 but with small hips and a flat chest. My friends all have big hips and breasts and tell me that I must have sex in order to get “Vitamin S” which will help me grow hips and breasts. I am normal? What can I do to be like them?

It is perfectly normal to have small hips and a flat chest at the age of 15.
Don’t compare the size of your hips and breasts to those of your friends because we all grow at different rates and girls at the same age can have different hips and breast sizes because of differences in families, hormones and weight. Be yourself and love the way you are because each one of us is unique.

You should not be deceived by your friends that you need sex to get “vitamin S” to help you grow big hips and to develop breasts. The truth is at same age (which may vary from person to person) in the life of a girl, the pituitary gland which is located at the base of the brain sends a message to the ovaries to begin producing the hormone estrogen. Estrogen travels throughout the body of a girl and is responsible for stimulating the changes that take place during puberty like the development of breasts and broadening of hips.

You should just relax because you really don’t have to do anything to develop breasts and big hips. These are some of the body changes which occur naturally in girls when they reach puberty. Just wait for your time to come.

At your age of 15 you need to concentrate on your studies, don’t even think of having sexual relationship simply because your friends are advising you to do so. Sexual intercourse may lead you to lack of concentration in class, early unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted Diseases (STDs) and school drop-out.

Dear Counselor, I am a girl of 14 years. A boy told me that if I don’t have sex, I will not grow and my breasts will remain small. Is it true?

Thank you for inquiring. Both reasons given to you for sex by this boy are wrong. The fact that you are in puberty, means that you grew from conception to infancy, childhood and now puberty, all without having sex to help you grow.
Breast size just like growth is also not determined by playing sex. At puberty, a hormone (substance that regulates body processes) called oestrogen, produced by the ovaries stimulates all major parts of your breasts to grow including the fatty tissue which makes the breasts grow bigger.
It is therefore not true that sex would make you grow or make you breasts bigger. Don’t be fooled by the boy who may even be having other intentions.
Your breasts may be smaller than those of your colleagues. This is normal because we all grow at different rates.

Dear Counselor, I am a girl of 16. For two month now, I have missed my periods. I am worried I may be pregnant. What are some of the symptoms of pregnancy?

The onset and degree of pregnancy symptoms vary within women. Some women experience them within days of conception others take much longer. Some of the common pregnancy symptoms include:

(i) Nausea and vomiting: Many women experience illness in the morning (morning sickness) and others feel nausea throughout the day.

(ii) Breast tenderness:  Due to the increasing amount of HCG hormone that begins at implantation, the breasts may become very tender to touch and may start to enlarge.  The veins in the breasts may become more visible. The nipples may start to darken in colour, become more erect and extremely sensitive. This sensitivity is due to rising levels of hormones.

(iii) Feeling tired/Sluggish/Fatigue
During pregnancy, the body goes through major hormonal changes. The temperature becomes higher due to the amount of progesterone circulating through the body making the pregnant woman feel sluggish. Fatigue is a result of high levels of the hormone progesterone.

(iv) Frequent urination: Pregnancy causes the uterus to swell and to start enlarging for the growing fetus. The uterus puts pressure on the bladder causing the feel for the need for more frequent urination. The need for urinating more frequently becomes worse throughout pregnancy for some women.

(v) Missed periods: There is no ovulation during pregnancy therefore a pregnant woman misses her menstrual periods. Missing your period is not a definitive sign of pregnancy, as stress or other factors may cause irregular periods.

(vi) Irritability: Many pregnant women as easily irritated as a result of the hormonal changes and the need to put up with all the pregnancy symptoms. Many women experience mood swings — feel angry, sad, or happy for no reason when they pregnant.

(vii) Heartburn: Pregnancy hormones will slow down bowel functions to give maximum absorption time of vitamins and nutrients. The stomach may not empty as fast which increases the stomach acid.

(viii) Enhanced sensitivity to smells: Some women become turned off by foods and smells they previously enjoyed. Likewise, some may become suddenly attracted to odors they previously repelled.

At your age of 16, just missing your period for 2 month does not necessarily mean you are pregnant.  It is normal for young girls not to menstruate regularly as their bodies are still growing. Menstruation is affected by so many factors like stress, emotional ups and downs, sickness, nutrition, fear, anxiety to mention but a few.
However, if you have a number of the above symptoms, you need to go to a health centre for a pregnancy test.

Dear Counselor, what disease has a sign of coming out as a milky liquid from the vagina? What causes girls to pass out white liquid from their vagina?

Naturally, girls have a clear discharge that comes out of the vagina. This discharge should not be of any color, be it green, yellow, pinkish, etc. It should also not be itchy or smelly. If you notice any of the above signs, go see a medical personnel preferably a gynecologist and they carry out tests to diagnose the cause of it. Many of the infections can be treated if one goes to the hospital early.

Dear Counselor, I am a girl of 18 years. I always have painful menstrautions. What causes pain during menstruation and what can I do about it?

Pains during menstruation are very normal unless if they are too severe. This pain is caused by the contraction of the uterus walls as blood is being shed and squeezed out. Pain-killers can help reduce on the pain and if it gets too unbearable, then you should see a health worker preferably a gynecologist and you will get treatment. A hot water bottle placed on the tummy can also reduce the pain.
Some girls, however, do not get pains at all during their menstruation and this too is normal.
